Earlier this year DC unveiled an ambitious “Summer of Superman” publishing initiative to celebrate the Man of Steel ahead of his return to the big screen. Those plans also included a brand new series for breakout super-canine of the year, Krypto, who headlines his own five-issue series set in the continuity of the DCU.

Today we’re taking a closer look at the first issue of Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton as DC has shared new cover art and preview pages. The series debut will land in comic book stores and on digital platforms from June 18, 2025.

There will come a day when Krypto stands beside Superman, helping him fight off monsters, aliens, and supervillains—a day when this dog will save his adoptive world thanks to the incredible powers granted him by Earth’s strange yellow sun. But he’s not there yet.

Today, Krypto is a normal puppy on Krypton, spending each happy, snoozy, endless day alongside his family: Jor-El, Lara, and baby Kal-El. But when a rocket test goes wrong, Krypto finds himself lost in space—and soon crash-landing, all alone, on a strange and alien world called Earth.

“Krypto’s origin has always been done at kind of a high level,” said Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton Ryan North. “The little guy starts out on Krypton, ends up on Earth, and helps Superman fight crime. The chance to really define Krypto—to show what a little lost dog would go through if he landed all alone on a strange alien world named Earth—was really enticing. And I also fell in love with the idea of treating Krypto as the actual dog he is: he doesn’t talk, and we don’t cheat by reading his thoughts in balloons either. Mike Norton’s art captures exactly what needs to be ‘said’ in every scene.”

It’s Krypto’s definitive origin story—and a pivotal part of the Summer of Superman—as told by writer Ryan North (Fantastic Four) and artist Mike Norton (Shazam!)! Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton is set to debut on June 18, and delivers a heartfelt and moving view of humanity, good and bad, through the empathic eyes of the ultimate outsider: a poor, lost dog, who just happens to have superpowers. Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1 will have a main cover by Jae Lee, a variant cover by Dustin Nguyen, a Superman Movie variant cover by Dan Mora, and a blank sketch variant.

DC has also shared a series of fully-lettered preview pages from the first issue which highlights the artwork of series artist Mike Norton. Take a look at each of the pages below:

Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1 will be available at participating comic book shops and digital retailers from Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
