We’ve been patiently waiting for something from the highly-anticipated Avatar sequel- Avatar: Fire And Ash, and today Empire delivered something very interesting. Diving into the character of Neytiri with Zoe Saldaña, Empire has given us our first look at the Na’vi badass, as well as a general idea of where we unfortunately find her in James Cameron’s third blockbuster epic.
Neytiri has been forever changed following the events of The Way of Water. The battle between the Sully family, the Metkayina clan, and the relentless RDA ended in tradgedy when Neteyam, Neytiri’s firstborn son, met his end and joined Eywa. Despite delivering Neteyam to Eywa, her son’s death will have a lasting impact on the family dynamic.
Check out the first look below:
“That pain is seamlessly followed up on,” Saldaña says. “And because it doesn’t really have anywhere to go, and doesn’t go away, rage can also come from it. [The Sullys] are going to be tested as a family.”
“Not only would everything that’s happening compel her to question the bond she has with her husband,” Saldaña says, “but also her bond with herself, her people, her land, and the way the Na’vi are. She’s going to question everything.”
Now, it seems as though Neytiri’s pain will cause a rift, but having an enemy to focus may actually help her vent that pain. In her interview with Empire, Saldaña revealed that Neytiri will “meet her match” in Varang, Oona Chaplin’s leader of the Mangkwan Ash clan. In a way, it almost mirror’s the fight between Jake and Quaritch where there’s this personal vendetta. Whatever happens in Fire And Ash somehow brings the two powerful Na’vi together, and that’s a fight we cannot wait to see.
Since we’ve had our first look now, we are so very certain that a trailer willn follow shortly, so keep those eyes peeled. Avatar: Fire And Ash will arrive on the big screen in the UK on December 19th.
