Star Wars is finally returning to the big screen. First, fans will be able to enjoy The Mandalorian And Grogu on May 22nd, 2026, and then we’ll be getting a brand new adventure on May 28th, 2027- just three weeks after Avengers: Secret Wars. Star Wars Celebration, which is currently taking place in Tokyo this weekend, saw director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) take to the stage to announce Star Wars: Starfighter.
Who will be starring in this brand new project? Ryan Gosling, of course. With an eruption of screams and an army of waving lightsabers, Gosling walked onto the stage to greet the excited sea of fans.
“The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,” said Gosling. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”
The project has been in development since 2022 by Levy, and collaborator Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project) wrote the script. Not much is actually known about Starfighter, and everyone at Celebrations obviously kept any details locked away in a holocron. The only thing we really know is that the film takes place roughly 5 years after The Rise of Skywalker, but is completely unconnected to the Skywalker saga.
“This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet,” said Levy
Star Wars Celebration is now in full-swing so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for more news regarding films, shows, books, comics, and collectibles. It’s going to be an insane weekend in Japan and we can’t wait to bask in all of the excitement.
