Huge news Ranger Nation. Our favourite multi-coloured superheroes the Power Rangers are reportedly heading to Disney+ with a brand new series. The Wrap has has exclusively revealed that work is underway between Hasbro and 20th Century TV to bring the decades old franchise back to our screens to capture a new generation of fans.
According to the report the studios has tapped Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz to board the project as executive producers, writers and showrunners. It is not yet known if both has inked deals to officially take on the job as yet.
The series is said to be a chance for Hasbro and partners to reignite the pop-culture phenomenon after several years in the wilderness. Netflix had been developing several projects under the Power Rangers name but these were quietly cancelled after more than two years development. Hasbro however has just announced a huge new partnership with Playmates to launch a new line of Power Rangers toys which are already delighting long-time fans.
Ownership of the franchise has bounced around since it first began in 1993. Going from original owners Saban to Disney in 2001, where it remained until 2010. The franchise was then sold back to Saban who kept the show on their and launched the now cult hit 2017 Power Rangers movie. Hasbro acquired the brand in 2018 in a deal worth $522 million. At the time, Hasbro said the Power Rangers brand had “tremendous upside potential” but they have, as yet, struggled to get both TV and film projects off the ground.
