We’re just a couple of days away from March 19. Is that a significant date I hear you ask. Not particularly. But it will be exactly three months since Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios and direct James Gunn debuted the first trailer for this summer’s Superman. With the film now only four months away from release, we’re taking a look at when our next glimpse at the film may arrive.
DC Studios heads Gunn and Peter Safran has both remained fairly tight-lipped on a second trailer. Fleeting mentions on social media have purported that a second trailer was being worked on. But nobody close to the film has given any kind of indication as to when it might be seen. But with so much time having elapsed it surely has to be coming soon… doesn’t it?
We think there’s two very likely candidates from when Superman’s second trailer will drop. The good news is that both of them are coming up very soon!
CinemaCon
The most likely (and nearest) candidate is CinemaCon. The annual event for studios and exhibitors is coming up in Las Vegas starting March 31. Warner Bros. Pictures has a panel on the schedule for 16:30 on April 1, that’s 23:30 for us here in the UK. The panel, dubbed “The Big Picture”, is being hailed by the studio as a chance to show off their upcoming slate. What better place to show off the crown jewel in its 2025 calendar?
There’s also a precedent for WB bringing its DC properties to CinemaCon. It was at that very panel back in April 2023 that the studios showed The Flash – in full – to the audience. It’s a great venue to begin building excitement amongst the cinema chains. So with over 55M views for the first trailer on YouTube already, why not continue to build on the buzz by giving exhibitors an exclusive first look before releasing a new trailer to the world?
Superman Day
If Gunn or anyone on Team Superman isn’t quite ready to show off a trailer at the beginning of April. Then we have an even better, if slightly later, date that would be perfect. This year DC Comics and Warner Bros. is moving its annual Superman Day celebrations from the unofficial date of June 12 to its traditional April 18 home. Why April 18? Well that’s the anniversary of when Action Comics #1 first hit newsstands. The perfect day to celebrate all things Man of Steel.
Now the studio could choose to show off a trailer at CinemaCon but hold back its publish release for over two weeks. But with plenty of attendees at the trade show willing to describe what they had seen. We’re betting that is unlikely to be the case. It’s far more likely that there will either be a global launch to coincide with CinemaCon. Or WB will completely hold back the release of a trailer until its Superman Day celebrations.
This year the Man of Steel turns 86. But with the film coming out DC and WB are pulling out all the stops. Seems like the perfect time for a trailer?
Marvel vs. DC Crossover
The other major option would be to team a second trailer with another major studio release in cinemas. Now 2025 isn’t short on major releases but a lot of those are releasing close to the Man of Steel himself. With Superjurasstic right around the corner – the release of Jurassic Park: Rebirth, Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps – none of those is likely to be the right candidate.
Paramount Pictures has Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning releasing on May 21 which would certainly put David Corenswet’s debut in front of a lot of eyeballs. But that’s also less than two months before Superman hits cinemas by which time promotion should already be kicking in to high gear. There’s also Sony Pictures new Karate Kid movie releasing in May but that’s not debuting until the end of the month, far too late for Warner Bros.
The most likely candidate is, of course, Marvel Studios next major release, Thunderbolts*. That film hits cinemas across the world on May 2, leaving plenty of time for more promotion before July rolls around. MCU movies come with a guaranteed core audience of comic book movie fans. The perfect people to witness Superman on the big screen and carry that buzz out in to the world. If the studio does indeed decide to hold the second trailer to release it with another major pictures then Thunderbolts* is far and above the best choice.
