Over the weekend the great and the good of science fiction were out in force for the annual Saturn Awards. One of those actors walking the red carpet was Blue Beetle and Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña. Whilst attending the ceremony Maridueña updated fans on when his DC hero may return to our screens…
Back in June we reported the news that DC Studios had begun development on an animated series which would feature Maridueña’s return to the role. When asked by The Direct about the project he had an encouraging update for fans:
“I’m ready to come back. We’re hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year” said Maridueña.
Asked about whether he had discussed a live-action return with DC Studios’ co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran, Maridueña played coy but had a great response about the potential to see Jaime again:
“Look, he’s got his hands in his kitchen. I don’t want to walk in while the chef is doing his thing. But I can say that once they’re finished with this three-course meal, I’m ready. And look, I have no reason to believe that he’s lying. Like, whatever, we’re adults, say whatever you want to say! [laughs] I’m just happy to have done this first one and I’ll continue to spread the word about that while we get the second one drafted up.”
Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the director and screenwriter of the 2023 film, are expected to executive produce the animated series alongside John Rikard who served in the same capacity on the film. Galen Vaisman, who was an EP on the film, will oversee the animated TV series for DC Studios.
