Surprise news overnight from James Gunn and the Hollywood trades. DC Studios is teaming up with Warner Bros. Animation for its first theatrically released animated movie, Dynamic Duo.
As per Deadline, Dynamic Duo will follow the early days of two of Batman’s most legendary Robins: Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. The story is said to follow the exploits of these two future Robins as they team up as young thieves who become known as the Dynamic Duo.
What is not yet known is whether the story takes place within James Gunn’s DCU or will exist as an Elseworlds tale. Whilst arriving under the banner of DC Studios, Dynamic Duo is set to be produced by Matt Reeves through his 6th & Idaho company alongside new animation house Swaybox, run by husband-and-wife creators Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson. Mintz will direct the movie.
Swaybox uses a technology known as “Momo animation,” which is a cross between CGI animation, practical elements of stop-motion, and live-action real-time performance. The result is long-form storytelling billed as visually breathtaking, dynamically expressive and more human.
“I have wanted to make a film with Arthur and Swaybox for many years, and for that film to be Dynamic Duo, an incredibly special and unique Batman and Robin story for families, is a dream,” says Reeves in a statement.
Speaking on Twitter James Gunn says “Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI, a script from the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho. This is something special.”
Not release date or casting has been confirmed at the time of writing.
