MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN 2×05 “Most Eligible Superman” Review

My Adventures with Superman season 2 airs new episodes every Sunday on Max in the Nordics, Iberia & Central Europe and Saturdays on Max in the US. Episodes also air HBO Max in Poland & the Netherlands and on Channel 4 in the UK & Ireland.

    Synopsis

Lois and Clark’s relationship is pushed to the breaking point when Superman is named Metropolis’ Most Eligible Bachelor! Meanwhile, Jimmy gives a cute girl a tour of the city… a girl on a mission to find her long-lost cousin!

    Review

We’re reaching the half-way point in the second season of My Adventures with Superman and the series is taking time, again, to introduce a new character. One whom the audience is going to be VERY familiar with. At the same time, “Most Eligible Superman” is a brilliant example of the series’ continued ability to toe the line between comedy and drama.

I’ve got to choose my words incredibly carefully this week as My Adventures pulls out all the stops to blindside the audience with another truly original interpretation of a classic character. The synopsis tells you everything you need to identify who it is. We’ve seen her trailers. She appears on the poster. Plus she’s been heavily sign-posted all season. Yes. Kara Zor-El, the Woman of Tomorrow, aka Supergirl is making her My Adventures debut this week and oh what a debut it is.

With characters like John Henry Irons, Lex Luthor and the Toymaker we’ve seen original interpretations of classic DC characters. Each has appeared in different circumstance to where we might expect them. On top of this the writers have introduced new approaches to their characters which fit in to the My Adventures world without compromising their original identity from the comics. The introduction of Kara may just be their most daring yet. Part fish out of water, part force of nature. Kara is an instant favourite amongst the cast. Kiana Madeira brings a youthful energy and warmth to Kara. But much like Jack Quaid, Madeira imbues that warmth with an unwavering strength which can become commanding when the moment calls for it.

Kara’s introduction comes at an awkward time for the Man of Steel. “Most Eligible Superman” side-steps the Amanda Waller/Task Force X storyline to show a lighter side of life in Metropolis. When Perry (Darrell Brown) tasks Clark and Lois (Alice Lee) to cover the city’s Most Eligible Bachelor contest they’re a little confused. But this year’s contest has a twist. Superman has been named as one of the contenders and the whole city is anticipating his appearance. Never one to disappoint his fans, Superman shows up and takes part giving the episode some great comedic moments. But it also proves to be an unexpected test for Clark and Lois’ relationship which brings some abrupt and surprising drama. Drama which is left unresolved as Clark and Kara finally meet for the first time.

    Verdict

My Adventures with Superman is challenging its characters in dramatic fashion against the backdrop of introducing a huge new character to the mythology. The series incredible writing is on fire this week
