Marvel is gearing up to launch a brand new solo series next month for one of the X-Men’s A-list characters. In the X-Men’s upcoming From the Ashes era, Jean Grey takes to the stars to fulfill her divine destiny in Phoenix, a new ongoing series by writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Alessandro Miracolo. The highly anticipated debut issue comes to comic book stores on July 17, 2024.
In the recent Rise of the Powers of X #5, one of the final issues of the X-Men’s Krakoan Age, Jean Grey was dramatically reborn as the Phoenix and promptly saved all of existence from an all-consuming AI Dominion. It was a battle outside of time and space that will go down in Marvel Comics history, and only a taste of the awe-inspiring feats that Jean will continue to achieve in her new solo series.
Reigniting suns, suppressing black holes, taking on the likes of Gorr the God Butcher and Thanos’ Black Order singlehandedly, and teaming up with fellow space-faring heroes like Nova, Corsair, and Captain Marvel—Jean is no longer the Earth-bound X-Man you knew; she’s the Phoenix, now and forever! Glorious adventures await, but while the galaxies beckon Jean for salvation, will they also be reminded of her appetite for destruction?
Phoenix #1’s variant covers include breathtaking pieces of Jean by industry superstars like Rose Besch, Greg Land, Aka, and Peach Momoko. And like many of Marvel’s major launches, Phoenix #1 will have a fiery Foil Variant Cover drawn by the legendary Joe Quesada.
In an interview with CBR, who also shared an exclusive first look, Phillips teased, “Thematically, I’m interested in exploring the interplay between human and cosmic forces that is happening within Jean. Some in the cosmic universe know her as Jean Grey, and some fear her as the Phoenix.”
“I want us to explore how that will impact her mission as a hero in the stars,” she continued. “The book also looks at the hierarchy of the cosmos and where Jean fits into the hierarchy. There are some incredibly powerful entities out in space… what will they think of Jean’s presence as the Phoenix?”
