Despite expressing keen interest in continuing his endeavour deep into the MonsterVerse, it appears as though Director Adam Wingard, director of Godzilla vs Kong and The New Empire, will not be returning to the newly announced sequel.
Instead of dealing with the chaos that Godzilla and Kong bring to the screen, Wingard will be directing a new action thriller called Onslaught for A24, which is prepping for a fall shoot. With Legendary eager to quickly leap off of the success of Godzilla x Kong, which is now the 2nd highest grossing movie in the MonsterVerse, they’ll be looking for someone else to babysit the two Titans. This could potentially mean a fresh start for the franchise, depending on the direction of this new movie.
Currently, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scribe Dave Callaham is working on a script for the sequel. However, as of right now it’s impossible to determine whether this new movie will continue to explore the mysteries of the Hollow Earth, or perhaps return to a more Godzilla-esque narrative.
While we’re sad to see Wingard go, it will be exciting to see who will step up to the challenge. In addition to that, with Wingard moving onto another project, we’ll still be able to enjoy his work. Who knows, perhaps the MonsterVerse has another plan in mind for Wingard. The future is so uncertain, but we’re just glad to know that we’ll be getting more Godzilla and Kong goodness soon. Possibly sooner than we think.
