Breaking news this morning. Overnight the Hollywood trades, including Variety, are reporting that The Creator director Gareth Edwards is in talks with Universal Pictures to helm the next film in the long-running Jurassic World franchise.
The news of Edwards talks with the studio comes following a break down in negotiations with Deadpool 2 director David Leitch.
The currently untitled seventh film in the franchise, scheduled for release on July 2, 2025, will mark the beginning of a fresh storyline. It’s still unclear if any previous stars, including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern or Jeff Goldblum, will return.
Steven Spielberg is executive producing through Amblin Entertainment. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley will produce, and David Leitch and Kelly McCormick will also produce through 87North. David Koepp, writer of the original Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park films, will pen the script.
Over the course of three decades the Jurassic franchise has grossed over $6 billion at the world-wide box office. The most recent movie, 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, surpassed $1 billion worldwide.
