Synopsis
Jen Ona is not excited to start her new, fast-paced fast-food career at Minilla Burger, but she’d much prefer a mundane day to the sudden return of Megalon!
The monster brings destruction, trapping Jen in a forgotten lab deep beneath the restaurant with only the half-built form of Jet Jaguar to help her get out! She must repair the robotic defender to save herself and the city, but first she needs to escape the rubble trapping her in this tense adventure!
Review
What begins as a calm story about Jen who is looking to hit the refresh button on her life rapidly turns into chaos. Just at the moment when Jen was being taken through the beginning steps at her new job at Minilla Burger by her new not as enthusiastic boss, what are first feels like a huge earthquake rips through the neighborhood sending Jen and her boss tumbling underground alongside all the rubble tragically killing her boss in the process.
When Jen comes to she is trapped under a load of rubble, unfortunately breaking her legs in the process, Jen awakes to find herself deep under Minilla Burger and in a secret lab where she is introduced to Jet Jaguar, well the top half anyway Jet asks Jen to help put him back together which in a normal situation would be tricky but when both your legs are broken it becomes a little more tricky but it must be done if Jet can save San Francisco from Megalon, now this is a race against time, tick tock!!
This one shot issue has an almost Manga feel to it with the deep story and over the top action and I am definitely here for it. Nola Pfau at first writes the story of Jen as she tries to reset herself after harrowing events but then to be able to switch that up and provide a story with heart racing action without getting lost really does take alot of talent. The story has drama and emotion by the bucket loads and also inspires with it’s powerful message, never give up!!
The illustrations of the good hit hard with bold tones and powerful colours, Megan Huang perfectly captures the action sequences throughout the book as Jet Jaguar takes on Megalon, each dramatic blow captured with the perfect tones and colours. The different tones of emotion that run through the book are dealt with in perfect fashion with the illustrations providing the accompaniment needed to add the right level of depth to the story.
Verdict
A good follow on story for the Jet Jaguar story vein, a character that is relatively new to me but I am definitely enjoying the introduction so far. If you’re after a larger than life action story with an undercurrent of emotion then I’d definitely recommend this as a pick up for your festive reading list.
