In celebration of the cinema release of Poor Things, the highly anticipated new film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, Searchlight Pictures and the Barbican Centre are proud to host a free exhibition of original costumes from the film, as worn by stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe. The Costumes of Poor Things is curated by costume designer Holly Waddington and is on display in the Barbican Centre, Level G foyer from 11th December 2023 to 19th January 2024.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Alasdair Gray and brought to the screen by the award-winning director of The Favourite and The Lobster, the film is the tale of the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist,Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Holly Waddington, costume designer said, “I’m delighted that these costumes are going to be on display in this great iconic building.  I’ve always been a huge fan of the Barbican – its thrilling architecture and all of the wonderful things that go on here. I’m excited for visitors to the Barbican to be able to see these costumes up close.”

In addition to the costume display, the Barbican will host two exclusive previews of Poor Things in Cinemas 2 and 3, hosted by Campari, official drinks sponsor for Barbican ScreenTalks, as part of a gala screening event taking place in Cinema 1 on December 14th.  The film will be screened across Barbican cinemas during its UK release.

Poor Things will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 12 January 2024.
