In celebration of the cinema release of Poor Things, the highly anticipated new film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, Searchlight Pictures and the Barbican Centre are proud to host a free exhibition of original costumes from the film, as worn by stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe. The Costumes of Poor Things is curated by costume designer Holly Waddington and is on display in the Barbican Centre, Level G foyer from 11th December 2023 to 19th January 2024.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Alasdair Gray and brought to the screen by the award-winning director of The Favourite and The Lobster, the film is the tale of the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist,Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
Holly Waddington, costume designer said, “I’m delighted that these costumes are going to be on display in this great iconic building.
