Gareth Edwards’ The Creator is officially out in cinemas, and what a treat it is. However, despite the wave of positive reviews, The Creator had a fairly disappointing weekend at the box office. Paw Patrol: The Might Movie prevailed with $23 million domestically and $24 million internationally, while The Creator opened with only $14 million at the domestic box office.
While it failed to impress at the domestic box office, The Creator found success amongst its international audiences earning over $18 million. In total, The Creator made over $32 million worldwide against its $80 million budget. Of course, it’s way too early to tell whether this movie will make a profit, but there’s a chance the early reviews could usher in new audiences. Given the scope and scale of this movie, it truly would be a shame to miss out on this spectacle.
Now, there are several factors to consider when looking at the financials. With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, actors and writers were unable to promote this movie. For already established IPs like Paw Patrol and Saw, promotion works differently because there is already an audience at the ready. For an entirely new project like The Creator, promation can make or break a movie. This is where positive word-of-mouth comes into play. With people talking, we could see a spike in viewership. So while the film suffered a slight blow, there is still hope.
Regardless of its money, people seem to be really enjoying The Creator. James had the opportunity of watching it early so check out his thoughts below:
The Creator will take audiences into the heart of a huge war between humanity and artificial intelligence… A war that humanity is losing. The film will focus on a hardened ex-special forces agent called Joshua, played by John David Washington, who is grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan). Joshua is recruited to track down and kill “The Creator”, the elusive visionary behind the A.I. who has developed something far more dangerous- a power that could end both the war and mankind.
Joshua and his squad journey through enemy territory only to discover that the instrument of their destruction is a child. What secrets does this child possess? How can one child wipe out the entire human race? And can Joshua live with the guilt of ending the life of a child? All relevant questions, of course. Questions that will be answered when the film arrives in September.
Directed by the brilliant Gareth Edwards, The Creator stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Allison Kanney, Ken Watanabe, Amar Chadha-Patel and Ralph Ineson. The sci-fi epic is in cinemas right now, so what are you waiting for?
