Review
On first glance Old Man was a film that intrigued me straight away, from the look of the film it came across as a bit of a physiological horror with edge of the seat scares, however the film was indeed gripping but with less of the horror and more of the physiological as this had more twists and turns than Silverstone race track.
The film starts off with what you expect to be the sinister groundwork for what horror is about to come. You see the “Old Man” (Stephen Lang) wake in a panic as he searches his run down shack for what you think is his trusty companion he is disturbed by a knock at the door, as the door opens he is greeted by a lost walker Joe (Marc Senter) and this is where the story becomes interesting.
The Old Man agrees to Joe to enter as he seeks temporary shelter, the film moves forward as the two settle into a rather tense conversation as the two open up slightly to learn more about the other. This is the part of the film I found to be the most interesting as the two imbark on an in-depth soul searching conversation that allows you to get more of an understanding of how the two turned up in this situation, but as the film goes deeper you see a complete 360 twist in the story that completely changes the entire film and you see that the whole film is a story of the discovery and the living with one man’s mental health. Without spoiling it and giving the plot of the film away too much, the direction from Lucky McKee shows incredible talent telling a dark and heartfelt story that will keep you guessing throughout.
Stephen Lang expertly portrays a worn figure that is slowly descending into mental darkness in a film that will keep you on your toes as you try to unravel what is unfolding before you.
Verdict
A film that definitely took me by surprise, I thought I was seeing a gruesome slasher but what I actually saw was something alot deeper than that. Actor choices were spot on and the level of storytelling was intense. A definite recommendation from me for a film that will twist your brain.
