Synopsis
Planeswalkers Karn and Ral Zarek team up to navigate the lonely and often treacherous space between flesh and machine.
Meanwhile, a romantic outing between Vraska and fan-favorite Jace? The circumstances are a bit less than ideal for the burgeoning couple…
Review
In this one shot issue we explore the planes through two paths, firstly we see Ral Zarek as he takes a small group of allies deep below the surface to search for something he knows not of the power within. Ral is playing a dangerous game to find an artifact that will prove his worth and his love but what lies within the artifact could well be more powerful than he ever expected.
After that we look at another blossoming love between Jace and Vraska, something is troubling Jace keeping him awake at night with no answer to reason why, a distraction is needed and a walk through the local town should do the trick it what they find there takes them on a perilous journey, a distress call is answered but to what price wil be paid? This journey could well bring Jace and Vraska closer together.
A kind of super group of writers are responsible for the story inside this book Stephanie Williams, Daniel Warren and Dave Rapoza come together to provide a different angle to the stories we been following through the other stories from the MTG universe. In terms of pace the book didn’t really take off fully for me and felt like more of a background story rather than one that has the power to stand up on it’s own. I felt the book was a good read but not as action packed as the previous Magic titles I have read.
The illustrations this time are handled by the talented duo Alberto Locatelli and Lea Caballero who do a great job at keeping the look and feel of the Magic universe so the story feels part of it rather than a fully stand alone title.
Verdict
I did enjoy the book in general but thought the pace was a bit slow and took it’s time to get going. As I said earlier in the review I felt the book was more of a background building story rather than a stand alone possible off shoot title, but definitely added more depth to the characters we already knew.
