Great news for Superman fans this morning. Overnight The CW has confirmed that Superman & Lois will return for a fourth season after months of speculation. Unfortunately the news comes at a price as the network also confirmed that Gotham Knights will end after just one season.
As first reported by Deadline, Superman & Lois will return under a brand new deal that will see it become the sole remaining DC Comics property on the network. The deal, which cuts season four down to just ten episodes from the usual 13, is also said to include sharing of the series’ streaming rights. Superman & Lois currently streams classic episodes on Max.
As per Deadline, to make the return deals possible there will be budget cuts that include reducing the number of series regular cast members. Superman & Lois has 12 series regulars, none of the lead cast are said to be impacted. Speeding up the deal was the looming deadline on their contracts at the end of this week.
The CW was quick to celebrate the news on their social media channels:
Whilst Gotham Knights has been a respectable ratings performer, The CW has undergone significant changes this year after its sale by co-owners Warner Bros. And CBS. Under different circumstances there’s no denying that the show would have continued. But in the currently climate The CW has to trim its ballooning budgets moving forwards.
No word yet on when the fourth season of Superman & Lois will debut. With the ongoing writers strike in the US, work on the series likely won’t begin until after the summer.
