Review
The brilliant new Superman series returns at full force this month as the Parasite arc continues. Issue #3 of Joshua Williamson’s run picks up right where we left off last month, with Superman being overcome by microscopic versions of the villain continue to smother Metropolis.
Williamson and Campbell hit the ground running with this new version of the Man of Steel. The pacing has been exquisite so far and that continues this month. In fact, it’s hard to believe just how much Williamson is able to pack in to the story here. Superman #3 is blockbuster stuff but still able to provide plenty of teases for the future.
It’s hard to know which to lavish with praise first. The story. Or the artwork. Rarely does a creative team become so cohesive so quickly. But Williamson and Campbell have made Superman a premiere DC title and a must-read upon release.
The issue of SuperCorp, Clark’s inheritance of Lex Corp and everything within it still has plenty of fruit to bare. Currently it’s sitting very much on the peripheral of the Superman story but each month Williamson is edging it closer to the centre of the story. Using Parasite to push Clark to the limit is a perfect way to leave him no choice but to interact with SuperCorp. That beautifully leads us in to a spring board for next month as we may finally see more development of this side of the story.
The other thing Supes needs to deal with, besides Parasite, is Lex. Last month the Man of Steel was forced to run to his arch nemesis for help. The results of which really push the narrative though issue #3. The enforced team-up challenges Clark in all the best ways possible and Williamson really uses that to his advantage. By the end of the issue it really breaks new ground for their relationship and the series. I’m excited to see where it leads.
Meanwhile, Jamal Campbell has now more than proven himself as one of the most exciting artists working in comics today. From start-to-finish Superman is beautiful. The colours are dynamic, Metropolis lives up its name and feels like a living breathing character. Action scenes look energetic and powerful but then so too do quieter character moments.
Utter perfection…
Verdict
Williamson and Campbell prove themselves one of the best teams in comics with another blockbuster issue of Superman.
