Review
At the beginning of this collected edition we see a young Rudy as he and his friends dream of hitting the big time playing at the annual BASH final game, hours are spent playing basketball in the inner city courts daydreaming of playing on that hallowed court. Rudy’s father was a legend in the BASH finals game and Rudy feels it’s his destiny to follow in his footsteps but his mother has other ideas, she’s lived through it before and it tore her family apart once before and she doesn’t want it to happen again.
We learn there are bigger events unfolding other than the setting for the biggest basketball game of the year, the fate of the universe is at threat, the cosmic energy given off by Rudy’s father has been sensed by the forces above high in the galaxy, but this can’t be right Rudy’s father died in a tornado many years ago? Or did he?
Meanwhile spotters from one of the biggest teams in the BASH League, the Pirates have spotted the talent that Rudy has but pulling away from his friends is not how he wanted this to go they were all meant to make it together, this could be the one shot that Rudy will ever have but the thought of leaving his friends behind may sway him.
I found it fascinating to read BASH, being a big NBA fan I’ve known of Rudy Gobert and his skills on the court but I didn’t for one second think that the skills could translate into writing, the book was well balanced and meaningful a story that explores a man’s quest to follow his dreams but also fulfill his destiny. The illustrations of the book were great with the gritty city streets dramatically brought to life, Vince Serrano created a vibrant book that gives the reader an eye catching experience throughout and elevates the story.
Verdict
I enjoyed this story, it’s relatability and rawness worked well giving a well balanced experience overall. A must read for sci fi fans and NBA fans to get a different side of a legend.
