    BATMAN / SPAWN UNPLUGGED Review

Batman Vs SPAWN Unplugged is published by DC Comics and illustrated by Greg Capullo and Todd McFarlane.

Unplugged is available 14th February 2023 either directly from DC Comics online or from your local comic book store, digital copies will be available to download from the usual content providers.

    Synopsis

The comic book crossover of the year, Batman/Spawn, will put the artwork front and center in Batman/Spawn: Unplugged. The unlettered, inks only version of the Batman and Spawn team-up will highlight the art and inks by industry icons Greg Capullo and Todd McFarlane.

    Review

At the back end of last year I was lucky enough to get to review the iconic crossover Batman/Spawn #1, a brilliant collaboration between the teams at DC and Image Comics.

The book itself was mind blowing and I enjoyed seeing the two iconic comic characters side by side in the same book. A different version of the book has been released with the subtitle Unplugged, which is a stripped back version of the story with the focus purely on the illustrations allowing them to tell the story in powerful black and white.

I thought the original story was powerful but this unplugged version just hits different, the illustrations seem to become more powerful and more gruesome which is a strange sensation as the illustrations are the same just minus the colour but for some reason they take on a different life.

I’m already a huge fan of Todd McFarlane and love the work he’s done with the Spawn universe but this teaming up with Greg Capullo has elevated that love further with the illustrations blowing my mind all over again. It’s a different sensation to read a comic with no words and still be gripped by the visual story telling but this is exactly what the book does.

    Verdict

As the saying goes “actions speak louder than words” no words are needed here as the illustrations are the actions and they scream the loudest. Two iconic illustrators doing what they do best. If you’re a Batman or Spawn fan then you definitely need this in your collection.
