Avatar: The Way of Water has almost overtaken Titanic as the 3rd highest-grossing movie of all time. With the anniversary of Titanic approaching, it might be a James Cameron vs James Cameron showdown for that third spot. Regardless, it’s safe to say that The Way of Water made more money at the box office than originally predicted. With Avatar still dominating at the box office, and the future of the franchise almost set in stone, Producer Jon Landau decided to reveal some interesting details regarding the other Avatar sequels.
In a conversation with Empire, Landau talked through some of the things that fans can expect from the next three visits to Pandora. Let’s take a look:
Avatar 3
A brand new race of Na’vi will be introduced in the third film. Currently known as “Ash People”, this new fire-based clan will blur the borders between good and bad. In his interview, Landau described the Ash People as “an aggressive, volcanic race” and then revealed that the leader will be a Na’vi called Varang, who will be played by Game of Thrones actress and Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter Oona Chaplin.
“There are good humans and there are bad humans,” Landau said. “It’s the same thing on the Na’vi side. Oftentimes, people don’t see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we aren’t aware of.”
Avatar 4 & Avatar 5
Avatar 4 will include a hefty time jump, which will then lead nicely into Avatar 5. In a previous interview with Gizmodo, Landau confirmed that we go back to Earth “to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth.” Now, thanks to The Way of Water, we know that Earth is dying. But what does that look like exactly? “There’s over-population and a depletion of our natural resources that make life harder… But we don’t want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going,” Landau added. “The films are also about the idea that we can change course.”
There we have it. With 3 more films in ther works, this isn’t a huge amount to go on. However, it’s enough to get us excited. With what The Way of Water did with the Metkayina Clan, can you imagine a fire-based clan? We’ve never seen a volcano on Pandora before. In terms of that James Cameron spectacle, the mere thought of an active volcano sounds mindblowling. On top of that, there’s also the promise of going back to Earth. Why would Neytiri be going to Earth? What does Earth look like now? There are so many questions, and we probably won’t get the answers for any of them for quite some time. However, this is a very good start.
Will more details be dropped later on? We certainly hope so. Avatar 3 is set to be released in cinemas on December 20th, 2024. Additional sequels, while not 100% confirmed, have release dates set for December 18th, 2026, and then December 22nd, 2028.
