Synopsis
Jaime Reyes arrives in beautiful Palmera City for a gap year with his tías working at their restaurant. But Jaime’s got another thing on his mind, like who was that mysterious Yellow Beetle, and how are they connected to the Reach message that bombarded his scarab? Can Blue Beetle track down this new scarab, or will this super-heroing bring the full might of the Justice League down on Jaime?
Review
In this issue we follow Jaime as he puts “super-heroing” to one side and begins a gap year working in his family’s restaurant in Palmera City, but thoughts of the mysterious Yellow Beetle soon take his mind back, however Jaime has officially been grounded by Superman and forbidden to take part in any superhero activities so investigating the Yellow Beetle would go against the wishes of Superman and the rest of the Justice League and they aren’t people you want as enemies but there are questions that need answering.
When the questions get too much Jaime goes to Kord Industries where he believes the answers will be found, but someone is waiting and all is not what it seems.
Josh Trujillo has provided a story that is dully packed with fast paced action but still keeping the fun vibe, Blue Beetle feels more light hearted than most DC Comics series and it’s quite refreshing to get into a different style of hero and you still get that feeling that the story is still only in first gear and there is so much more to come from the series.
The vibrant illustrations from Adrian Gutierrez really show off the story to it’s best giving the fun action story a bold and vivid look that highlights the action packed story.
I personally am enjoying this story arc it brings a new flavour to the DC world which is normally a dark place and Blue Beetle is giving it the much needed injection of colour and vibrant fun.
Verdict
A great story arc that is continuing to grow and move forward, a fresh story giving the DC world a well needed colourful rejuvenation.
