Avatar: The Way of Water is currently dominating at the worldwide box office, and it’s safe to say that seeing the highly anticipated sequel on the big screen left us wanting more. How much more will depend entirely on how The Way of Water and Avatar 3 do financially, but we have a feeling that director James Cameron will have the opportunity to explore Pandora to his heart’s content.
Avatar 3, rumored to be called The Seed Bearer, may seem far away, but Cameron is already dishing out some interesting pieces of information about his next adventure. While talking to French outlet 20 Minutes, Cameron revealed that Avatar 3 would introduce a brand new Na’vi clan and culture. Along with the Omatikaya clan (The Forest Tribe) and Metkayina clan (Ocean Tribe), this new tribe would mark the third clan that the film’s have explored in depth. Now, it appears as though that this particular clan will differ significantly compared to the others.
Currently labelled as the “Ash People”, this new clan will be fire-related. We don’t really know what that means just yet, but if we look at the other clans we can absolutely make some educated guesses. It’s safe to assume that this particular clan will have physical differences that allow them to survive in much harsher climates- perhaps near a volcano. The wildlife they utilise could also be very different. The Way of Water introduced us to a lot of water-based creatures, so what could fire-like animals and a fire orientated habitat look like? It’s an interesting question to ponder and one we’ll have to sit on for quite some time.
The major difference that Cameron discussed was not based on any physical attributes, but rather the overall spirit of this new clan. While the other two clans have been inherently “good”, this fire clan will display the Na’vi culture in a whole new light. Who knows, they could potentially be villains in this third film.
Here’s what Cameron had to say:
“The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to reveal the Na’vi from another angle because, for the moment, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we’ll have the opposite.”
We have quite a bit of waiting to do before we receive anything concrete about Avatar 3, but this is a very decent start. Avatar 3 is set to be released in cinemas on December 20th, 2024. Additional sequels, while not 100% confirmed, have release dates set for December 18th, 2026, and then December 22nd, 2028.
Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.
