Surely this can’t be a surprise? It’s safe to say that there were definitely some concerns regarding Avatar: The Way of Water‘s success. Now, it’s unlikely that this sequel will match the success of its predecessor, which made just under $3 billion, but there’s no denying that this sequel is a force of nature in its own right. We knew it would be a hit, but we never expected the film to hit these massive figures in this amount of time.
So, let’s recap!
It only took 14 days for Avatar: The Way of Water to hit $1 billion at the worldwide box office. To put that into perspective, it took Top Gun: Maverick 31 days, Jurassic World Dominion more than 4 months, and Spider-Man: No Way Home 12 days to reach $1 billion. Avatar: The Way of Water is now part of a very exclusive group… It is now the 6th movie to cross $1 billion in its first two weeks of opening.
What’s interesting about this is that there is currently no competition. In terms of major releases, The Way of Water is free to dominate until the release of Disney’s next big hit Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania which hits theatres in mid-February. Of course, the numbers will gradually trail off but The Way of Water is proving to be incredibly resilient and insanely popular- surprising no one.
What the film will end on is an absolute mystery at this point, and considering that the first film had an incredibly length run at the cinema, it’s impossible to predict just how high Avatar will soar.
As of today, The Way of Water has pushed to $1.1 billion. As the numbers climb, we’ll be sure to keep you posted on this incredibly journey. For now, don’t forget to check out James’ full review of Avatar: The Way of Water right here.
