Well, this was a pleasant surprise that came out of absolutely nowhere. Gamera, a legendary and greatly beloved kaiju, is gearing up for his big comeback which will be streamed worldwide on Netflix. There’s not a lot of information about the project right now, but we do know that this new project will be called Gamera- Rebirth.
Not familiar with Gamera? Don’t worry, we’re here to help. Gamera first appeared in 1965 in Gamera, the Giant Monster. Similar to Godzilla, Gamera was mutated by exposure to nuclear weapons. Gamera resembles a giant turle but is so much more than that. Gamera can breathe fire and fly. However, Gamera’s flying technique is slightly more unique… He curls up in his shell and essentially becomes a spinning frisbee- it’s fantastic. The legendary kaiju has starred in 12 films- 8 in the Showa period which spanned from 1965-1980, and then 4 in his Heisei persiod which started in 1995 and ended in 2006.
As the films have progressed, Gamera became known as the protector of children. Overtime, Gamera took on a more benevolent role and became humanities guardian from other Kaiju and alien monters. If you love the charm of the old Godzilla movies, then you’ll fall in love with Gamera who is slightly more quirky. Having said that though, Gamera does confront some of the coolest enemies such as Gyaos, Irys, Legion, and Guiron.
Before Gamera- Rebirth arrives on Netflix, we recommend doing some research because Gamera is a lot of fun, and it’s interesting to see how the films and productions have developed over the years. Gamera’s most recent appearance was back in 2006- that’s almost 17 years ago now. Won’t it be fascinating to see how this new project is crafted? As kaiju fans in general, we can’t wait.
Showing support for Gamera, director Shusuke Kaneko, who directed three of Gamera’s movies, had this to say about Netflix’s upcoming project:
“When I proposed my own concept for Gamera in the Reiwa era, KADOKAWA was already working on a new project. The content seemed to make sense to me, so I have high expectations for this project as well. So, as a baseball commentator with experience as a Gamera team manager, I will continue to support it until it wins the championship and I take the plate again.“
While we wait for more information, you can check out the teaser below. You can also visit the official site for Gamera- Rebirth which will hopefully be updated as news becomes available. Regardless of how long we have to wait, we can’t wait to see Gamera back on our screens.
