It’s been 17 years since Keanu Reeves took on the role on John Constantine in the Francis Lawrence directed Constantine. But that near two-decade gap hasn’t stopped a dedicated fanbase from petitioning for a sequel to happen.
After Collider masterminded a 15th anniversary panel during 2020’s San Diego Comic-Con@Home it seemed that interest in a sequel had piqued Warner Bros. interest. With Reeves then appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, telling the audience that Constantine was a role he wanted to revisit, it tipped the scales.
Though no release date has been announced there is absolutely more Constantine on the way and Lawrence has touched on it in a new interview, once again with Collider.
“It’s something that we’ve been talking about since we made Constantine because we all loved it,” says Lawrence. “So we’ve been talking about it, talking about it, talking about it. All the DC [properties], because Vertigo is part of DC, that sort of like the control of those properties got complicated with Warner Bros. with DC, with J.J.’s deal, you know, all those kinds of things. There’s a lot of complicating factors. So it was never Akiva [Goldsman], and Keanu, and I happen to be sort of convinced to do it. It was really trying to figure out how we can get some sort of control over the Constantine character again.”
We continue to await news on when the film will go in to production.
