Fans and audiences were truly gifted at this year’s D23 Expo. To say that we are jealous is quite an understatement. However, we weren’t left out completely. Thanks to the power of social media, it felt like we were part of this magical journey as well. Although, as with any event of this scale, there were of course exclusive sections at the Expo; sections that were only seen by those who attended, Avatar: The Way of Water showcased 3D footage which wowed crowds. Here’s a brief summary of what was shown…
D23 Expo Avatar footage:
- Swimming scenes showing the Na’vi enjoying the waters of Pandora.
- The Na’vi watching an old video of Sigourney Weaver’s Dr. Grace Augustine. It is believed that the young Na’vi played by Weaver is also watching the video- There is definitely something going on there…
- A fight in the forests of Pandora.
- A confrontation between Jake and Neytiri. They appear to be fighting about leaving their home due to the dangers that are gradually surrounding them. It was apparently very heated.
- More swimming scenes, showcasing the new technology implemented for the underwater scenes.
Now, that was not the only thing James Cameron wanted to share during the Expo. Joining virtually from New Zealand, Cameron gave fans an update on the other sequels. Cameron confirmed that post-production for Avatar: The Way of Water is “going great”, filming for Avatar 3 is still happening since both 2 & 3 were shot together, and Avatar 4 has officially started filming.
What’s important to note here is that some filming for Avatar 4 was done during the filming of 2 & 3. Scenes were shot primarily to capture footage of the young actors playing Jake and Neytiri’s children while they are still young. But now, the film has entered production. It’ll be interesting to see whether Cameron films 4 & 5 together.
