Synopsis

This is it. The final confrontation between Spawn and Black Azrael. Will Spawn take the crown or doom the world instead?

Review

The moment that all King Spawn fans have been waiting for has arrived, King Spawn finally gets his hands on Black Azrael and yes we are not talking fisticuffs at dawn, this is set to be the most bloody confrontation ever as the pent up rage and emotion that has been festering inside Spawn is set to be unleashed in the most epic of end games.

All along throughout the series King Spawn has sought vengence for the callous murder of his wife and truest love Wanda, a loss that has effect him deeply which will be definitely channeled to his strength in this battle. The graphic nature of what we see as the battle unfolds shows the shear emotion and heartbreak that Spawn has suffered throughout this arc and one that Black Azrael has tried to use as a weapon against Spawn, but this is far more personal than just heaven and hell.

Sean Lewis heads up the writing once again which for me is the main strength of this arc with the strength of the writing allowing the arc to mature at a steady pace. This arc isn’t just your normal Spawn story this feels more multidimensional than that with raw emotions running through each page giving the reader a breathtaking experience.

The illustrations from Javi Fernandez are the strongest they have been in this arc, each panel shows the emotion and pain that Sean is trying to highlight in the written words. Although this issue is graphic it is done in a tasteful way that excentuates the story giving it a more emotional feel.

Verdict

I can only give this a full mark score, this arc gets better and better. Sean Lewis is one of the most exciting writers in comics at the moment and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
