We loved Sonic The Hedgehog 2. It’s not a secret, in fact you can check out James’ review for the sequel right here. While we were certain that Sonic 2 would do well with audiences, as well as in the box office, we didn’t really anticipate Sonic speeding through like a bat out of hell and breaking multiple records. Of course, we’re not looking at a box office on the scale of No Way Home, for example, but within the realm of video game adaptations, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has been killing it.
Grossing over $160 million at the box office, Sonic The Hedgehog has become the highest grossing video game movie of all time in the US, even beating Tom Holland’s Uncharted.
What does this mean for the worldwide box office then? Well, Sonic 2 currently sits on roughly $323 million. This actually places it in 7th in regards to video game adaptations. It hasn’t quite overtaken Disney’s Prince of Persia yet, but Sonic was able to gracefully glide past Assassins Creed, Tomb Raider, and even the film that gave us our first live-action Sonic. At the top of the list, surprisingly, is Warcraft which grossed just under $440 million. Interestingly, Warcraft only grossed $47 million at the US box office so it relied almost entirely on the international gross. just belowWarcraft in 4th place at $395 million is Uncharted.
Can Sonic The Hedgehog do more? Momentum has definitely slowed. However, it’s obvious that the Blue Justice still has some fuel left in the tank. Regardless, what Sonic The Hedgehog has achieved is incredible. Not only has it been breaking financial records, but it has also been an absolute hit with critics and audiences alike. People are loving Sonic, and we don’t think we’re alone when we say that we are so ready for what comes next. Bring it on.
