Review
This issue sees the beginning of the end of one of the most gripping series I’ve read in comics in recent years. Issue #14 of Home Sick Pilots sees the Old James House near defeated by the Nuclear Bastard, Ami is still inside trying to hold on but they need the final ghost, can Buzz and Rip reach them in time? The final ghost holds the key to the Old James House (in the spiritual sense) and for it to survive it needs the final ghost to enter with the others, but true to the series so far there is still a major twist to this story in what is shaping up to be an emotional ending.
From the first issue this series has given me everything I wanted and more, the content surprised me as I didn’t think it would be as deep as it has been and the emotional connection has stuck with me throughout. Dan Watters for me is one of the stand out writers in comics right now, he has written a story that has grown with each issue bringing an action packed story arc that connects with the reader on an emotional level a truly well rounded reading experience.
Casper Wijngaard has kept the unique look to the illustrations throughout this series and a style that is now synonymous with the story, the dark tones and colours really highlight the dramatic illustrations that give the reader a more immersive reading experience.
Verdict
I’m hooked. I don’t think this series could ever produce a bad book, from the first issue the comic has grown in strength, creating an iconic series that will stand the test of time. This is the comic I look our for and will be sorry to see it go but I’m looking forward to an epic ending.
