Review
In this issue we take a look back at the origin story of Thomas Wayne’s alternate universe Batman in time for Flashpoint Beyond. In a different twist in the story to what we are usually told we follow a weathered Jim Gordon and Thomas Wayne as they take the battle to Gotham’s underworld.
The story takes a dark twist as the Joker kidnaps the District Attorney’ twin children so begins a race against time for the cowled hero, but it’s not the hero we know behind the cowl. This story is particularly dark with familiar faces popping up in new scenarios, this story is not just your usual DC darkness this feels like it’s building towards something and that something could well be darker than we ever know.
The writing of Brian Azzarello is physically mesmerising, once you open the book you are taken on a dark journey that sticks in your consciousness and something you keep going over, this is am origin story which means it has gone back to lay the foundations for an arc that has the potential to become epic and for that I look forward to the next issue.
The illustrations are dark and dramatic and quite typically DC, Eduardo Risso does a particularly good job in creating a visual masterpiece that brings the pages to life, the colouring style from both Patricia Mulvihill and Dave Johnson has worked well together with the illustrations to create a visual symphony that creates a dark story arc that invigorates the reader.
I particularly found this issue interesting as it took me back to discover an alternative story to one I am used to and I look forward to see the arc unfold.
Verdict
A strong introduction to a story arc that has huge potential to rock the universe we know. A creative team that has come together to create something visually stunning and captivating.
