Well here’s a move you never saw coming… in some huge surprise casting news, it has been confirmed that Paul Wesley has joined the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The former Vampire Diaries actor has joined the ongoing production of season 2 as a rather familiar face.
After being spotted during some location shooting for the series, Paramount+ has confirmed that Wesley will be playing none of that the legendary James T. Kirk. They’ve even release our first look at the character which you can find in the tweet below:
In a statement, executive producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers said “Paul is an accomplished actor, an astonishing presence and a welcome key addition to the show. Like all of us, he is a life-long Star Trek fan and we are excited by his interpretation of this iconic role.”
his casting will come as a surprise to fans. The first season of Strange New Worlds doesn’t debut until May and is set over five years BEFORE Kirk becomes captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. For now this leaves us wondering how Wesley’s version of the character could factor in to the storyline.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Rebecca Romjin as Number One and Ethan Peck as Spock. Joining them are Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga and Bruce Horak as Hemmer.
The series premieres on Paramount+ in the US on May 5, 2022. We’re still awaiting confirmation of when and where the series will air in international markets.
