The week started out well for Warner Bros. with the news that Matt Reeves’ The Batman had opened with a huge $258M worldwide. But with the spectre of Covid-19 still looming large, the studio has had to make a number of changes to its upcoming slate.
Earlier this evening, Dwayne Johnson took to social media to confirm that both of his DC properties due for release in 2022 are on the move. First up, DC League of Super-Pets has shifted from May to a new release date of July 29, 2022. Does that date sound familiar to you?
The July date was formerly occupied by Johnson’s other DC property, Black Adam. That film will now drop on October 21, 2022. Just in time for Halloween.
The news was shortly followed by a wider shakeup of the WB slate. The Flash, formerly due for release in November, will now debut in cinemas on June 23, 2023. James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom vacates it December 16, 2022 slot and will now debut on March 17, 2023. The latter move takes Aquaman away from another water-heavy movie, James Cameron’s Avatar 2 which is also due for release on December 16.
It’s not all bad news however. It’s been confirmed that David F. Sanberg’s Shazam: Fury of the Gods moves up almost 7 months from June 2023 to December 16, 2022. Yes, Zachary Levi will now take on Avatar at the Christmas box office.
Oner film in the slate which remains untouched, for now, is HBO Max’s Batgirl. That film, which is currently still in production in Glasgow, factors in heavily to the story told in The Flash. It’s likely that Leslie Grace’s debut as Barbara Gordon will also move back towards summer 2023.
The studios Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel, Wonka, starring Timothee Chalamett vacates the March 17, 2023 slot and will debut on December 15, 2023 instead.
