The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Middle Earth’s first anime feature film, has received an official release date from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation. Variety has reported that the anime original is set to be released on April 12th, 2024.
This new anime film is set roughly two centuries before the events of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. More specifically, The War of the Rohirrim looks to be exploring of Helm Hammerhand, the ninth King of Rohan, and the actual creation of Helms Deep. Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus) is directing with producer Joseph Chou through the anime studio Sola Entertainment.
Philippa Boyens, who was part of the Oscar-Winning writing team for The Lord of the Rings, is executive producing this new anime feature with Phoebe Gittens (Boyens’ daughter) and Arty Papageorgiou penning the screenplay which is based on the script originally written by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Lord of the Rings legends Richard Taylor, Alan Lee, and John Howe will also be part of the huge creative team attached to this brand new project.
“I’m in awe of the creative talent who have come together to bring this epic, heart-pounding story to life, from the mastery of Kenji Kamiyama to a truly stellar cast,” Boyens says.
Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said “It’s a gift to be able to revisit Middle-earth with many of the same creative visionaries and the talented Kenji Kamiyama at the helm. This will be an epic portrayal unlike anything audiences have ever seen.”
Currently, there isn’t any information regarding the cast, but with a date set in stone we’re certain that we will soon hear who will be travelling to Middle Earth in this epic and massively ambitious anime film. So, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for further announcements.
