The Batman is officially coming to China. It’s been confirmed that Warner Bros. has been able to secure the film a release in the notoriously difficult market. The announcement marks a significant shift in the Chinese market, which has mostly stayed away from big studio releases for the past 12 months.
Notably, China has yet to confirm a release for the blockbusting Spider-Man: No Way Home. A Chinese release could help the Sony Pictures production to become one of the most lucrative film’s in box office history.
In a video posted to the Warner Bros Weibo account, Batman star Robert Pattinsonaddressed Chinese fans saying, “Today, I have good news for you,” while Zoë Kravitz added, “our new movie, The Batman, will be released in China.”
The Batman‘s audience friendly PG-13 rating will have aided in the decision to release in China. Todd Phillips R-rated Joker is the only recent DC project to fail in securing a Chinese release due to its increasingly dark tone.
Written and directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman is set to star Robert Pattinson in the title role, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon and Paul Dano as Edward Nashton.
The film is currently slated to hit UK cinemas on March 4, 2022.
