Believe it or not it’s been almost a decade since Batman last appeared in a solo movie on the silver screen. The Dark Knight Rises brought to an end three films worth of cerebral storytelling from Christopher Nolan. But now producer of Matt Reeves’ The Batman is setting his sights on topping that legendary trilogy.
Speaking with Empire Magazine as part of their The Batman cover story, Dylan Clark has discussed throwing down the gauntlet with Nolan and raising the bar for solo-Batman-storytelling on the big screen.
“I’ve said this to Chris Nolan directly: ‘Look, we’re trying to be the best Batman ever made, and we’re going to try to beat you’,” says Clark. “Matt is interested in pushing this character to his emotional depths and shaking him to his core.”
But make no mistake, this isn’t about simply making a better movie, as Reeves himself adds, it’s about creating a fresh approach to the character.
“We’ve seen a lot of great stories about Bruce Wayne witnessing his parents’ murder and then trying to find a way to cope with that by perfecting himself into Batman,” explains Reeves. “But I wanted to do a story where he’s already been through the origins and does not yet really know exactly how to be Batman. It is a Year Two story. And I wanted you to connect to him. Not only as Bruce, but as Batman.”
