Great news for Blue Beetle fans this morning as Variety has confirmed the upcoming film from director Angel Manuel Soto is shifting to a theatrical release. The project had initially been confirmed to stream via HBO Max but will instead release in cinemas on August 18, 2023.
According to the trade the film, set to star Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña, will focus on the most recent version of Blue Beetle, introduced in 2006, as the Mexican-American teen Jaime Reyes.
There was an outcry from fans when the film was first announced to release on HBO Max. Many felt that the studio was burying an under-represented hero rather than pushing him to a wider audience. It seems Warner Bros. has heard those concerns and decided to act upon them.
