Review
WARNING: this review contains spoilers for Hawkeye episode four and potential spoilers for upcoming episodes and MCU projects.
Another week, another episode of Hawkeye drops on Disney Plus and episode four introduces a lot of interesting plot points along with ending on a shocking and truly surprising note. Like last week, we get to learn more about the characters while progressing the story making it the best episode yet.
For most of the episode, everything seems a lot more laid back. You can feel the threat of Maya and the tracksuits looming but episode four primarily focuses on the growing relationship between Kate and Clint. They are trying to tie up some loose ends and stop the tracksuit mafia (really silly name, personally) from searching for them.
This week we also see the return of the LARPers from episode two which have, surprisingly, become a highlight of the show. They add some great comedic relief to the whole situation and just have a really nice screen presence. They’re all very likeable people and have some great banter with Kate, in particular.
However, the big moment in this week’s episode definitely is the final ten minutes where we see the return of Florence Pugh’s Yelena from Black Widow! If you remember correctly, in the post credits scene of that film, we see Natasha’s sister being given her next assignment, to kill Hawkeye, and we are now seeing that play out. This now adds a new threat to the show with a potential character that many are pretty certain will show up before the end of the season – Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin. This would make sense considering Kevin Feige recently said in an interview that Charlie Cox is the Daredevil for the MCU, which is fitting since he also played the character in the Netflix Original Series a few years ago. Many are speculating Cox will make an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home as Peter Parker’s lawyer after it was announced to the world that he is Spider-Man and framed for the attack on London during the climax of Far From Home by Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio. This would work in the grand scheme of the MCU but let’s see if this will age terribly in the next few weeks.
Verdict
Hawkeye episode four is the best one yet! There is some great mystery at the bone of the plot here but also a great fight sequence at the end that is very reminiscent of what we saw in Black Widow earlier this year. It may not have as much action as episode three but it certainly has a great surprise at the end. I cannot wait to see how they use Yelena’s character in the final two episodes!
