Review
I tend to take a keen interest most war genre books, games and film all peak my interest, normally I go for the more less thinking but more blowing stuff up vibe, however the true story of journalist Gareth Jones intrigued me and wanted to know more and find out the truth behind the famine of The Soviet Union that was not so discreetly hidden by the government regime headed by the infamous Stalin.
Mr Jones’drive to interview Stalin to uncover the truth is evident throughout the film, Mr Jones is a person who would not be silenced whatever is thrown his way.
The film pulls on many emotions as you go on the journey with Jones, the pure grit and determination he has to uncover the truth is inspirational and watching what he goes through to achieve is goal takes you on an emotional journey, Agnieszka Holland has done a fantastic job in bringing this legendary story to life in what pans out to be a film you just can’t pull away from. The performances from James Norton and Vanessa Kirby were captivating along with the sleazy unlikeable character Walter Duranty played by Peter Sarsgaard.
I personally felt that although the film probably won’t win any awards it was definitely a powerful film to watch and brings to the forefront of the mind the true depth of the atrocities that came from the Stalin regime.
A film that feels like a mix of genres, action, romance, survival and suspense works well and gets across the right message and highlights a stage in history that needs to be highlighted.
Verdict
I found Mr Jones a bit of a slower burner but when it did get into it’s stride the film was intense and captivating and a film I couldn’t look away from. A film that I would definitely recommend to anyone would has an interest in events in the wartime era this is definitely the film to grab a copy for yourself, I’d go as far as saying one of the best films I’ve seen this year.
