Review
Being a fan of most super hero comics, films and games I am normally intrigued when a new hero enters the mix bringing a whole new story and a whole new adventure. Ant is a brand new hero looking to save humanity in her own way and still looks as awesome as the others.
Erik Larsen brings a fresh look at the superhero genre bringing a different type of hero with her own agenda and unique styling, also definitely looks like one not to be messed with from what I’ve seen from this first issue there’s a whole lot more to come from this character.
In what seems to be taking inspiration from different superhero characters the story sees young Hannah Washington and how she develops into Ant and more importantly why she does it. Being the daughter of a struggling scientist and victim of viscous bullying she definitely has a decent motive for wanting to be a hero righting the wrongs of the world. As a new hero to the mix I found Ant to be a strong character and one that I hope will be built upon in the coming issues as I feel that there is alot of story in the character.
This is the first time I have come across Erik Larsen as a writer and artist to be fair I really liked his work, the story certainly seemed a strong introduction for the character and definitely has left me wanting fro more. Issue #1 has laid a very strong foundation for the story to come in what could potentially spawn a whole mini universe of it’s own as there is definitely potential for different characters to enter the fray.
The illustrations by Larsen himself were exactly what I would want from a superhero comic, bright punchy and to the point. You know from the cover what type of comic you’re getting and from the strength of the cover alone I would certainly buy it, a great job done by the team involved. It was also great touch at the end of the comic to tell the true origins of the Ant project and how it all came about.
Verdict
As an introduction to a new character and series Ant #1 definitely sparks the interest and makes you want more of it, certainly looking forward to what we will be getting in future issues from this series.
