Synopsis
Ravnica united! The Guilds have aligned just in time to find their sprawling city transformed into a battlefield! Their enemies are mutant horrors: citizens changed by their cultish devotion to an entity that threatens all life across the multiverse. Though our planeswalkers are now aided by guild warriors from Boros angels to Simic super soldiers, can Kaya, Vraska, and Ral Zarek reach Jace Beleren?
Review
As the Magic series has progressed it has become a more intense story where a once quiet city becomes an all out battlefield, different guilds are at war where it was all once so peaceful, it’s down to the Planeswalkers to restore peace but will their efforts be in vein? They must embark on a perilous journey to reach Jace Beleren, but it is an epic race against time. This for me had to be the best book of the series so far, it had a good mix of suspense and action along with an immersive story.
Jed Mackay has really captured the true essence of Magic the Gathering within this story arc, keeping true to the universe that has been played by millions around the globe and staying true to the fans whilst at the same time bringing the world to a whole new set of fans. Bringing such an iconic brand to life in comic form can’t be an easy task but Mackay certainly makes it look that way, the story naturally progresses as the arc moves along with the individual characters growth alongside developing into strong all round characters.
The while creative team led by Jed Mackay just get it right each time, each story seems more immersive than the last and takes you deep into the MTG world, I find it interesting to see the differences in Ravinca in each book shifting from a once peaceful world to a war torn abyss, the books seem to get darker as the arc moves along. Each book I read makes me want to dig out my old card stack and jump into a game once more.
Ig Guara seems the perfect pick to bring the MTG world to comic form, he seems to capture the true feeling of what the world is meant to be like, for years of playing the card game I often imagined what the world would look like Guara has definitely captured that and brought my childhood imagination to life. With the strength of the creative team on board I can only anticipate the story getting better and better from here.
Verdict
Another strong addition to the series issue #7 brings a darker intense feel to the arc. The story goes from strength to strength and I look forward to what the creative team will have in store for the next issue.
