Review
October seems to be the month to watch scary movies. Ones that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up… well Demonic definitely fits the bill. Neill Blomkamp has brought a film that takes you on a twisted supernatural journey that has you glued to the sofa, quick word of advice this definitely isn’t isn’t film to watch with the lights off, trust me I tried!.
The film sees a decades old family feud come to a head as an alternative therapy clinic, that uses technology to get inside your mind to seek the route of the problems, they reach out to Carly a mid aged woman going about her normal life to ask her to help unlock the coma her mother has been left in, Carly must use alternate reality to talk to her mother in another dimension to unlock the mystery as to why she is in her deep coma, but it’s not just her mother that is waiting in the dimension for her.
Unbeknownst to Carly she is about to unearth a whole world of demonic horror that plays out before our eyes, I will admit in parts the film does become slightly predictable with the stereotype dark corridors and gloomy doorways but my god the jump scares literally take you out your seat. Although there is a twisted nature about the film there is something about the story that keeps you watching, this is really the first time I’ve come across a horror film that had such a deep underlying story that keeps you wanting to watch to see how it plays out, a really great job done by Blomkamp.
The lead role of Carly was perfectly cast Carly Pope brings natural passion and emotion to the role making you want her to get to the end, Blomkamp for me has got so much right with this film it makes it a perfect watch for a scary night watch, may not be the perfect date night film probably better the second date maybe.
Verdict
I found Demonic a dark and twisted tale that had me fixated to the screen throughout but also had me not wanting to go into any dark rooms for a while after! This film will make you look at birds in a different light. Such a good job by all the team involved, fully recommend you get to see this but maybe get the eaten popcorn before you see it.
