The Hitman and the Bodyguard have returned for the action packed sequel, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, that certainly delivers the laughs and explosive action. But, does the sequel live up to its incredibly successful predecessor? Read on to find out.
The world’s most lethal odd couple – bodyguard Michael Bryce and hitman Darius Kincaid – are back on another life threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce (Reynolds) is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Hayek). As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectors, the trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman (Banderas).
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard begins with a bang and runs at an incredibly brisk pace that will never keep fans bored. There are shootouts and car chases scattered throughout the film that are highly entertaining and filled with energy. The action is filmed perfectly and is used in the right places when the dialogue-heavy scenes start to bring the pacing to a halt. It is quick-moving and fast paced, making for an engaging and energetic movie that is so over-the-top that it is hard not to love.
Ryan Reynolds (Free Guy, Deadpool), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Avengers) and Salma Hayek (From Dusk Till Dawn, Grown Ups) all return to their roles in such a brilliant way. Each character has their own idea on how to approach this world-threatening mission and the way they all play off each other is hilarious and where most of the comedy comes from in this film. The banter that Reynolds has with Jackson’s insanely violent hitman is hugely entertaining and is improved on from the first movie. That bond is much stronger in this movie and worked into the story a lot more than in its predecessor.
Antonio Banderas also plays the main antagonist in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard as he plays a fairly surface-level yet over-the-top villain. He definitely isn’t as memorable as Gary Oldman’s murderous criminal in the first film but feels like the right kind of character to oppose the Hitman, his Wife and Bodyguard.
The Blu-ray also has a great selection of special features that are all worth watching if you are a fan of the film. These include:
- Ryan, Sam, Salma: One F’d Up Family
- Gone Soft: The New Michael Bryce
- The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard: #stuntlife
- On the set of The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard
- Gag reel
Overall, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is yet another fun, action-packed trip with Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek. It is filled with over-the-top stylised action that is bombastic in all the right ways. Fans of the first film will have a great time with the sequel and it is a must-buy on Blu-ray if you are interested in watching this one. One of 2021s best action movies!
