Today the second season of Star Trek animated series Lower Decks returns to international audiences on Amazon Prime Video. You can read our review of the first episode of season 2 right here, but if you need a quick reminder on the events of season 1 and it’s finale we’ve also got you covered…
The first season brought together our four key crew members: Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells) and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). All four are working their way up through the ranks in Starfleet and currently service on the U.S.S. Cerritos under Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis). Freeman also happens to be Mariner’s long-suffering mother.
Throughout the course of season 1 Mariner hides her relationship with Freeman from her friends. Constantly stepping out of line and regularly ending up the brig. Boimler, however, has plans for a much more straightforward career. Sadly for him, his innate ability to send any mission sideways generally gets in the way.
Across the course of season one the team come up against an alien zombie virus, Klingons, holodeck mishaps and a multitude of other Trek inspired scenarios. All whilst building friendships and navigating the world at the bottom of the ladder.
The season one finale, “No Small Parts,” Boimler accidentally reveals to the crew that Mariner is Freeman’s daughter. Instantly causing the crew to come to her with all of their queries in the hope she can pull favour with the Captain.
The Cerritos picks up a number of new crew members including the first Exocomp (a reference to TNG), named Peanut Hamper, to join Starfleet.
After receiving a distress call from the U.S.S. Solvang the Cerritos steps in to provide assistance only to find the ship destroyed by the Pakleds. After years of being ignored by Starfleet following their encounter with the U.S.S. Enterprise, the Pakleds have become a little more formidable and launch an attack on the Cerritos.
Having developed an sense of self, Peanut Hamper refuses to deliver a virus developed by Rutherford to the Pakled ship. This leads Rutherford and security chief Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore) to fly a shuttle to deliver the virus themselves. After a confrontation with holographic villain Badgey, Shaxs saves Rutherford at the cost of his own life.
Just as the situation is looking grim for the survival of the Cerritos’ crew, Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) arrives with the U.S.S. Titan to save the day.
As the season draws to a close Mariner forgives Boimler for revealing her secret and Boimler accepts an promotion to the Titan alongside Riker and Troi (Marina Sirtis).
In case you missed it, here’s the trailer for season 2:
Created by Rick & Morty writer Mike McHMahan, Star Trek: Lower Decks features the voices of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero as the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos.
