Late last night news broke that actor Michael B. Jordan is developing a Superman project for HBO Max. the project, now known to be a limited-series, would focus on the Val-Zod incarnation of Superman from the pages of DC Comics.
Collider broke the original story, reporting that the Val-Zod project could be one of the DC films being produced directly for the WarnerMedia streaming service. It would later tweet “Sources have since reached out to clarify that [Michael B. Jordan’s] Black Superman project about Val-Zod is, in fact, being written as a limited series for HBO Max.”
The Val-Zod character has a similar origin to Kal-El, arriving on Earth – in this case Earth 2 – and being cared for by a man named Terry Sloan. Val-Zod would eventually go on to take the mantle of Superman on his version of Earth.
Jordan’s name has often been linked with Superman. The news recently surfaced again with the confirmation that writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and producer J.J. Abrams are working on a Superman project. It is understood that Coates version will be a period piece which will also feature a black Superman, only theirs will be a version of Kal-El and not Val-Zod.
