According to a report from Deadline, the highly popular (and rather horrific) manga and anime series Made in Abyss is getting a live action adaptation. The adaptation is currenrly in the early stages of development at Columbia Pictures. Kevin McMullin is set to direct the feature.
Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment will produce Made in Abyss alongside Masi Oka from Mobius Productions.
Made in Abyss is a manga written by Akihito Tsukushi and in 2017 it hit the world as an anime series. Due to its immense popularity a sequel film premiered in 2020 which continued the rather harrowing adventure shared between Riko and Reg. If you haven’t watched Made in Abyss we do recommend it. However, it isn’t an easy watch.
Made in Abyss follows an orphan girl called Riko. She goes on a giant quest to find her mother who has been presumed dead. The obstacle being the giant hole in the earth known only as the Abyss. The Abyss contains many treasures from previous civilizations which makes it a great spot for cave raiders. Unfortunately, being a cave raider comes with a list of risks. While there are indeed beautiful treasures hidden in the earth, there are also horrors. On her adventure, Riko becomes friends with a robot boy called Reg. Together, the pair explore the Abyss while searching for Lyza, one of the best explorers to enter the Abyss.
As of now, there isn’t a lot of information about the upcoming adaptaion. But we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any developments. So, make sure you tune in as we prepare for a world of hurt.
