Marvel Studios has been bigging up today’s episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier as something massive. An emotional episode likely to bring fans to tears. But also debuting a huge character from the comics to be portrayed by a familiar face.
Well now we know that character is Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and the actor was none other than Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep).
Following her debut in the episode Vanity Fair was quick to publish a story on how her character came to be included in the series. The piece also touched on Marvel’s plans for the character revealing she was first set to debut in Black Widow. With that film now delayed to July 2021 her debut shifted to this episode. That film was originally set to debut in May 2020.
More interestingly the report states that Marvel reportedly “has even bigger ambitions for Louis-Dreyfus’s villainous figure.”
In the pages of Marvel Comics de Fontaine was an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and love interest to Nick Fury. It was later revealed that she was a Russian agent affiliated with a group known as Leviathan. She has also gone by the name of Madame HYDRA, that title has a close connection with the story of TFATWS as another version of Madame HYDRA character ruled over a certain location called Madripoor. Could Dreyfus’ character be the Power Broker?
The six-part limited series will be directed by Kari Skogland and stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. Emily VanCamp returns as Sharon Carter alongside Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/USAgent.
