Review
The Superfam return this week with a crazy opening of him whizzing across to China to help with a bridge spontaneously collapsing. His sons seem to be getting used to his other job now which is refreshing. Back in Smallville though we see more of Lara’s family woes and get some development throughout the episode with them and all is not well, her husband is being even more of a douche while her daughter is pushing her further away. It’s becoming more apparent each week that Superman & Lois is a different type of show from its Arrowverse counterparts on the CW in that it’s more of a character piece with powers thrown in. This is not a negative by any means and I have found it quite refreshing, it’s this down to earth story set in the world where Flash is stopping a mirror powered villain and the Legends of Tomorrow causing mischief across time and for this reason it stands out.
Down the road on the Kent farm, Clark earned a few more sins this week by not telling his sons that he inadvertently eaves drops in on them using super hearing, even turning up to stop Jordan being beaten up. Cannot fault Clark too much as he is clearly just an overprotective parent but dude does need to learn boundaries!
The brothers themselves also go through their similar beats where Jordan tests his powers by trying out for the football team (also to rebel against his dad) which shows he does have his dad’s super strength but by doing this he accidently causes extra work for Jonathan by his coach punishing him for trying to keep Jordan off the team. This leads to another confrontation as Jonathan reveals an insecurity that football is ‘his’ thing, obviously despite his support the idea of Jordan taking over as the alpha brother is having an effect on him. Once again though, they resolve their differences and bond together when Jonathan convinces their dad to let Jordan compete. This to me has shown that Jonathan may currently be lacking in his dad’s powers but he has more than made up for it by inheriting his kindness and his heart.
Jordan also shows he has his father’s compassion when after knocking down his bully he apologises for kissing the dude’s girlfriend and faces his bully head on.
I’d also like to haphazardly throw in that Clark is an adorkable dad throughout! For the life of me I could not fit this into the review naturally so just going to throw it out there.
Lois continues down on her path to expose Morgan Edge, it’s a safe bet you’re on the right track when your foe tries to kill you twice in two days!
The second attempt on her life (while a convenient turn of events for her attacker) did lead up to this week’s big fight and what I will class as a phenomenal entrance for any superhero! With one press of a button Lois summons the full force of Superman in less than a second and sends the enemy flying through a wall (luckily no one stays at this motel!) but surprisingly this guy took all of Superman’s punches! For a moment I had thought this was a reimagined Metallo reveal but sadly this mysterious man did not get a name or a title, turns out he was just a tall super durable metahuman who was stupid enough to assume he defeated Superman with a few punches.
Clark saves his wife and the day once again but lets the bad guy run off, although in a shocking twist the bad guys escape was cut short when a lovely woman with laser eyes turned up in the middle of the road and melted him alive! It seems Morgan Edge is very good at covering his tracks and keeping a group of meta humans at his disposal.
Verdict
Another week with the Superfam and once again the show continues to deliver, the story takes another step in the right direction and stands far out from the rest of the CW Hero shows. While the special effects had one or two slightly iffy moments the character development of the main cast more than makes up for it and my investment for them continues to grow.
