Godzilla vs Kong is coming out very soon. Ever since we had the first epic trailer speculation and theories have spread like wildfire. Is Godzilla Mechagodzilla? Who will fall? How did Kong get so big? But the question we’re here to discuss today is all about Kong and his new weapon.
What is it and what is it made of?
To put it simply. It’s an axe. Given it’s numerous appearances in trailers and additional TV spots, it’s safe to assume that this massive weapon is going to play quite a big role in the film. Let’s face it, we’ve seen what Godzilla can do so for Kong to stand an actual chance he needs an edge. Unfortunately size won’t cut it… but an axe could.
What you’re looking at here is Kong triumphantly holding his axe in the air. It’s not the clearest image in the world but that’s why we’re here. Let’s start with the hilt because that could prove to be the most interesting aspect of this weapon.
Originally, it was believed that the hilt was made from a tree from Skull Island which could allow it to have some special attributes. Strength, durability and size. If it’s from Skull Island then the rules can be bent since we don’t actually know enough about the island. Much like the various monsters, the plant life on Skull Island could have been effected by radiation or the tree could have originated from the Hollow Earth.
However, after getting some images from the upcoming wave of Godzilla vs Kong vinyls, it is clear that the hilt isn’t a tree at all. It’s a bone.
This is where our speculation comes into play. Who’s bone is it? There are a few possibilities but we’ll focus on the main one which will actually branch off into two separate plausible scenarios.
This could be a bone from Godzilla. Given that the blade is actually a fin from Godzilla’s spine, the hilt would need to have some considerable strength to harness that ability without it simply breaking in half. Obviously, we aren’t Kaiju experts. But when you look at Godzilla’s atomic breath ability you need to consider it’s functionality. His entire body becomes atomic and he literally shots a laser. For that to be possible, you could argue that Godzilla’s skeleton and internal organs would need to be incredibly strong to actually withstand that type of energy. In addition to that, you could also say that his bones would need a means to absorb and distribute that energy. His skeleton could play a big role in Godzilla’s bright blue glow.
You can see the hilt glow red in the trailer numerous times. While this essentially debunks the theory above, there is a subtle way around it. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, when Godzilla enters his “Burning Godzilla” phase, he begins to glow red. This bone could be in a constant state where it is continuously consuming and feeding on atomic energy giving it its strength, durability, and enhanced power. Essentially, this bone could be constantly burning which would give it that red intensity that shines in the trailer.
So, lets assume that our theory is correct. What’s next? Well, the next thing to discuss would be how Kong acquired such a weapon. We believe there are two possibilities. Before that, lets just say that we don’t believe that the bone is from the current Godzilla.
Let’s travel back to 2014’s Godzilla. Dr. Ishiro Serizawa discovers a giant skeleton that resembles Godzilla but it can’t be him because the fossil is too old. After that, we never actually see what becomes of the skeleton. Did they just leave it? or did Monarch salvage it to study it? If that’s the case, then we could see Kong make the axe after being beaten by Godzilla. In that battle, Kong could rip a fin from Godzilla and know exactly what to do with it once the dust has settled and with Monarch’s help.
Here’s the other possibility. The weapon actually dates back to the ancient war between Godzilla’s species and Kong’s. The film seems to be teasing an epic rivalry that extends thousands of years. With that in mind, it is entirely possible that a previous Kong built this weapon to beat another Godzilla. Whatever happened, the weapon was left behind and the two species separated. If this ancient war took place within the Hollow Earth it’s possible that the feud ended with the remaining Godzilla retreating to the ocean, while Kong escaped the Hollow Earth and settled on Skull Island. Their rivalry vanished from history, all but forgotten. Until now.
So did Kong make this weapon, or is it a lost remnant from an ancient war? Both seem entirely possible. However, we’re leaning more towards Kong making the weapon due to how many glimpses we get in the trailer. Travelling to the Hollow Earth, if that does happen, seems like it would be happen towards the end of the film. But we see Kong wield it in multiple battles.
Regardless of its origin and inception, this axe definitely has a deeper role. Not only could it expand on the history between Godzilla and Kong, but it could also help establish Kong’s abilities especially in regards to his overall intelligence.
