Today, Vanity Fair shares some brand new and exclusive photos from Zack Snyder’s Justice League which showed Jared Leto’s The Joker in a brand new light. Along with the two new images, we also got a lot of new information about Leto’s role in Snyder’s Justice League.
Before we continue, there may be some slight spoilers going forward. But before we jump into what we discovered, you can check out one of the images of Joker’s new look.
Firstly, Snyder’s plan for his massive DC story always involved Joker. Unfortunately, after the whole studio fallout situation and Zack stepping away from Justice League, the director soon realised that finishing his full vision might not actually be possible. Snyder then requested additional photography so that he could squeeze the Joker in. It’s probably impossible to fit everything that Snyder had planned, so it’s likely that we’ll get a decent idea as to where it was originally heading. Zack actually goes into great detail about what we can expect and what his plans were. If you’d rather not know, you should definitely stop reading.
In the images, Joker is actually wearing surgical gear. According to Snyder, this outfit is a remnant from Joker’s time before the world was taken over by Darkseid and Superman. In addition to that, he also sports a bulletproof vest which is covered in law enforcement badges which Snyder calls “his trophies”. Snyder also confirmed that Batman and Joker will share a scene together.
Joker has a new look!
“The cool thing about the scene is that it’s Joker talking directly to Batman about Batman,” Snyder said. “It’s Joker analyzing Batman about who he is and what he is. That’s the thing I also felt like fans deserved from the DC Universe. That is to say, the Jared Leto Joker and the Ben Affleck Batman, they never really got together. It seemed uncool to me that we would make it all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together.”
More interestingly, Zack also said that we’ll learn why Batman had a Joker card attached to his gun in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s safe to assume that this ties into what happened with Robin. What will be interesting to see is how Batman gets the card, he definitely has an interaction with Joker, so is it a “gift” or a really bad joke…
Don’t forget, a new Justice League trailer is coming this Sunday
“I’d always wanted to explore the death of Robin,” Snyder said. “And if there ever was going to be a next movie, which, of course, there probably won’t be, I wanted to do a thing where in flashbacks we learn how Robin died, how Joker killed him and burned down Wayne Manor, and that whole thing that happened between he and Bruce.”
From the discussion with Vanity Fair, it seems as though Zack’s Joker lives outside of the continuity that we know. Events definitely line up, but his visual appearance seems to venture outside what we know. This actually explains the lack of face tattoos which we saw in Suicide Squad. So what do you make of this new Joker? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on HBO Max on Thursday 18th March.
Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman and Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. Joining them are Jason Mamoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash.
